Fourth Sunday of Easter April 13, 2008

Good Shepherd/Lutheran Social Services Sunday

KNOW GROW SERVE SHARE

We are pleased to welcome you to Lord of Life Lutheran Church.

TRADITIONAL WORSHIP 8:00 A.M.

celebration worship 10:30 a.m.

Holy Communion is celebrated at both worship services.

Holy Communion

WE INVITE all baptized Christians to share in the Holy Communion celebration. Alert the server (sign of a "V" with you fingers) if you prefer grape juice instead of wine. Communion cups containing grape juice are in the center ring of the communion tray. Please follow the usher's direction.

The Lord of Life sanctuary is equipped with a "Personal PA" sound system that includes hearing assist units. If you have difficulty hearing portions of the service, please contact one of the ushers.

We love Children in Worship! Thank you for bringing them. Smile at a parent with a child. (Smile twice at a parent with more than one.) A smile goes a long way to support their efforts – a frown can discourage for life.

A Nursery Room for infants and young children is located downstairs. Directions: Exit the sanctuary; to your right is the stairwell. Go down the stairs, through the double door, and turn left. The Nursery Room is located about three-quarters of the way down. Please feel free to ask an usher for assistance.

WORSHIP REGISTRATION CARDS: All members and guests are asked to fill out the registration card found in your bulletin. You may return it to an usher as you come forward to receive Holy Communion. (If you forget, please give the card to an usher after the worship service.)

Gathering

The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God

prelude O Sons and Daughters of the King Arr. E. Power Biggs

Welcome

*THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM

The congregation may turn and face the font. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation. C: Amen.

The presiding minister addresses the assembly.

P: Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.

Water may be poured into the font as the presiding minister gives thanks.

P: Blessed are you, O God, maker and ruler of all things. Your voice thundered over the waters at creation. You water the mountains and send springs into the valleys to refresh and satisfy all living things.

Through the waters of the flood you carried those in the ark to safety, you led your people Israel from slavery to freedom. In the wilderness you nourished them with water from the rock, and you brought them across the river Jordan to the promised land.

By the baptism of his death and resurrection, your Son Jesus has carried us to safety and freedom. The floods shall not overwhelm us, and the deep shall not swallow us up, for Christ has brought us over to the land of promise. He sends us to make disciples, baptizing in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Pour out your Holy Spirit; wash away sin in this cleansing water; clothe the baptized with Christ; and claim your daughters and sons, no longer slave and free, no longer male and female, but one with all the baptized in Christ Jesus, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen.

*GATHERING SONG #883 All People That on Earth Do Dwell

*GREETING

C: Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia!

*THE CANTICLE OF PRAISE This is the feast(see page 101)

*PRAYER OF THE DAY

P: O God our shepherd, you know your sheep by name and lead us to safety through the valleys of death. Guide us by your voice, that we may walk in certainty and security to the joyous feast prepared in your house, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen.

Hymn of the Day #780 Shepherd Me O God

(stanzas sung by the choir)

*The NICENE Creed (please stand) A.M: With the whole church, let us confess our faith.

All: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

Eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

True God from true God, begotten, not made

Of one Being with the Father;

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary

and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

He suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

In accordance with the scriptures;

He ascended into heaven

And is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

And his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

Who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

Who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,

Who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

coffee and topics (c.a.t.s)

Would you like to start your week with lively discussion and fellowship? We welcome you to give CATS a try. We get together on Monday mornings, 9:00 a.m. at the home of Joyce Johnson. We would love to have you join us.

YOUR WEEKLY GREEN MESSAGE

Common Sense Idea #1: Never dispose of motor oil, gasoline, or kerosene by pouring them down a drain or sewer. One quart of motor oil can make 250,000 gallons of water undrinkable. This is more than 30 people can drink in a lifetime. What should you do? Use it up (only buy what you need, even if the smaller size is more money per ounce than the bigger size). Follow label instructions for disposal (if given). Recycle (check with your local auto service shops). Please care for our environment by disposing of hazardous wastes responsibly.

THE CHICAGOLAND FRIENDS OF LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF SPRING LUNCHEON will be held Friday, April 18 at Manzo's Banquets, 1571 S. Elmhurst Road, Des Plaines, at 11:30 a.m.. Both men and women who are interested in the ministries of LWR are welcome to attend. The speaker this year will be the new president and CEO of Lutheran World Relief, The Reverend John Nunes. Tickets for the luncheon are $15.00. For more information, contact Barbara Peterson.

FELLOWSHIP COMMITTEE

Take a break from the kitchen! The Fellowship Committee has arranged with The Village Tavern & Grill for a Dining Out event. This is similar to the outing at Pilot Pete's last year. Flyers will be available at church with the date and time – Sunday, April 20th between 1:00 and 5:00. Take your flyer with you to the restaurant and present it to your waiter with your dining check at the time of payment. We will receive a check for 20% of the net amount (before tax and other charges) of all Lord of Life diners that day. The proceeds will be given to the Schaumburg Food Panty. As you know, they were a resource for the residents of Legend Park Apartments after they were displaced due to the fire. Enjoy a delicious, affordable meal and provide food for others in need. You can browse the menu at www.pilotpetes.com. Scroll down to Village Tavern & Grill and click on "Menu".

DO YOU SHOP AT ULTRA? If you shop for groceries at Ultra Foods (located on Barrington Road in Hanover Park) between now and June 1st, save your receipts! Bring them to church and put them in the envelope marked "ULTRA" on the bulletin board in the narthex. Lord of Life will receive an amount equal to 5% of the total purchases made by our members during this promotional period. We will donate these funds to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. Thanks to Ultra for supporting charitable causes in the community, and thank you for shopping!

Lifelines deadline for the May issue is Monday, April 14. Please send information to Anne Behrens at lifelines@lord-of-life.org and copy to Judy at loloffice@lord-of-life.org and also our Webmaster, Dan Behrens at ddbehrens@comcast.net. We would like to remind ALL leaders, staff and chairpersons that the Lifelines is only effective if YOU are proactive about sending information. There is a lot going on at Lord of Life and we want to get the word out too about sharing and growing our faith here and in our local community. Thank you for your efforts. Anne Behrens and Judy Voegtle

PS: It has been brought to my attention in the church office that several families have not received their copy of the April Lifelines. It may take 10 days for the Lifelines to reach your home after it is delivered to the post office. There are a few extra copies at church. You may also access the Lifelines from your home computer at www.Lord-of-Life.org then move cursor to"Resources" for drop-down menu and click on "Lord of Lifelines Newsletter."

Notes to the custodian

If there are any concerns or suggestions in reference to the church and how it is maintained, please put a note in Dave Johnson's mail box which is located on the lower level and to the right of the stairwell. Thank you

lord of life Love fund

One of the less publicized ways that we at Lord of Life reach out to help others in our midst is through the "Love Fund". These funds are used, in very low profile way, to meet special needs of members and friends. The fund could use a "good boost" to replenish funds that have been used during the year and to help meet some special needs that currently exist. Let's lpause, give thanks for our blessings and give little (or a lot) extra to the Love Fund so that we will be able to meet those needs.

CHRIST IN OUR HOME—Light for Today daily devotional booklets for April, May, June 2008, are located on the usher's table in the narthex. Please feel free to take a copy for your daily devotion. There are several Large Print editions available.
