LORD OF LIFE LUTHERAN CHURCH

Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Schaumburg, Illinois 60193

847-895-8877

Sixth Sunday of Easter April 27, 2008

TRADITIONAL WORSHIP 8:00 A.M.

celebration worship 10:30 a.m.

Holy Communion is celebrated at both worship services.

Holy Communion

WE INVITE all baptized Christians to share in the Holy Communion celebration. Alert the server (sign of a "V" with you fingers) if you prefer grape juice instead of wine. Communion cups containing grape juice are in the center ring of the communion tray. Please follow the usher's direction.

The Lord of Life sanctuary is equipped with a "Personal PA" sound system that includes hearing assist units. If you have difficulty hearing portions of the service, please contact one of the ushers.

We love Children in Worship! Thank you for bringing them. Smile at a parent with a child. (Smile twice at a parent with more than one.) A smile goes a long way to support their efforts – a frown can discourage for life.

A Nursery Room for infants and young children is located downstairs. Directions: Exit the sanctuary; to your right is the stairwell. Go down the stairs, through the double door, and turn left. The Nursery Room is located about three-quarters of the way down. Please feel free to ask an usher for assistance.

WORSHIP REGISTRATION CARDS: All members and guests are asked to fill out the registration card found in your bulletin. You may return it to an usher as you come forward to receive Holy Communion. (If you forget, please give the card to an usher after the worship service.)

Gathering

The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God

prelude

Welcome

*THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM

The congregation may turn and face the font. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation. C: Amen.

The presiding minister addresses the assembly.

P: Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.

Water may be poured into the font as the presiding minister gives thanks.

P: Blessed are you, O God, maker and ruler of all things. Your voice thundered over the waters at creation. You water the mountains and send springs into the valleys to refresh and satisfy all living things.

Through the waters of the flood you carried those in the ark to safety, you led your people Israel from slavery to freedom. In the wilderness you nourished them with water from the rock, and you brought them across the river Jordan to the promised land.

By the baptism of his death and resurrection, your Son Jesus has carried us to safety and freedom. The floods shall not overwhelm us, and the deep shall not swallow us up, for Christ has brought us over to the land of promise. He sends us to make disciples, baptizing in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Pour out your Holy Spirit; wash away sin in this cleansing water; clothe the baptized with Christ; and claim your daughters and sons, no longer slave and free, no longer male and female, but one with all the baptized in Christ Jesus, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen.

*GREETING

C: Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia!

P: The joy and peace of God be with you all.

C: And also with you.

*THE KYRIE In peace let us pray…. (see page 98)

*THE CANTICLE OF PRAISE This is the feast(see page 101)

*PRAYER OF THE DAY

P: Almighty and ever-living God, you hold together all things in heaven and on earth. In your great mercy receive the prayers of all your children, and give to all the world the Spirit of your truth and peace, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

CHILDREN'S SERMON

THE SERMON

Hymn of the Day #397 Loving Spirit

*The NICENE Creed (please stand) A.M: With the whole church, let us confess our faith.

All: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

Eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

True God from true God, begotten, not made

Of one Being with the Father;

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary

and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

He suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

In accordance with the scriptures;

He ascended into heaven

And is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

And his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

Who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

Who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,

Who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

*prayer of intercession

Each petition of the prayers concludes with words:

A.M: God of life,

Response: hear our prayer.

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

LIKE TO WRITE?

Have we got an opportunity for you! Someone who likes to write and has access to email is needed as a contact between Lord of Life and local newspapers. We would like to keep all of the newspapers kept up to date on what is happening at Lord of Life. If this is your gift, please contact Vonnie Neel.

Your weekly green message

Common Sense Idea #39: Paint contains solvents and metals poisonous to people and the environment. When disposed of improperly—down the drain, or on the ground—it can contaminate the ground and water. Buy only as much paint as you need, or give leftovers to neighbors and friends. To find out how to dispose of it properly and learn about upcoming disposal opportunities, contact the Illinois EPA (www.epa.state.il.us/events). Please care for our environment by disposing of hazardous wastes responsibly.

DO YOU SHOP AT ULTRA? If you shop for groceries at Ultra Foods (located on Barrington Road in Hanover Park) between now and June 1st, save your receipts! Bring them to church and put them in the envelope marked "ULTRA" on the bulletin board in the narthex. Lord of Life will receive an amount equal to 5% of the total purchases made by our members during this promotional period. We will donate these funds to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. Thanks to Ultra for supporting charitable causes in the community, and thank you for shopping!

JUST FOR LIFE!!! Lutherdale will be coming to Lord of Life the week of July 21st. Day Camp is from 9 AM - 2PM Monday through Thursday and 9AM - 12PM on Friday. lord of life Love fund

One of the less publicized ways that we at Lord of Life reach out to help others in our midst is through the "Love Fund". These funds are used, in very low profile way, to meet special needs of members and friends. The fund could use a "good boost" to replenish funds that have been used during the year and to help meet some special needs that currently exist. Let's pause, give thanks for our blessings, and give little (or a lot) extra to the Love Fund so that we will be able to meet those needs.

CHRIST IN OUR HOME—Light for Today daily devotional booklets for April, May, June 2008, are located on the usher's table in the narthex. Please feel free to take a copy for your daily devotion. There are several Large Print editions available.

UPCOMING CIA EVENTS:

First - Thanks to all the CIA kids that made our volunteer effort at the Kenneth Young Center last Friday a huge success! We straightened clothing and shelves, and helped get things in order for the weekend. Kenneth Young Center is our Community Mental Health and Senior Services Center and their Resale Shop provides over $500,000 in much needed funds for the facility.

Yurts are US. This Sunday night at 6:00 pm, we will have the CIA/Confirmation Retreat Parent Meeting. All parents that have confirmation kids that are planning to attend should come with their kids and find out what the buzz is all about - and what the rules and regs are for our retreats. Confirmation kids and CIA'ers should turn in their forms and fees at that meeting so we can let Lutherdale know how many are coming. What's a Yurt? You'll find out at the meeting.

CIA CALENDAR

Sunday April 27th 9:15 am CIA Board Meeting. 6:00 pm Retreat Planning Meeting

Sunday May 4th 7-9 pm Senior Bible Study

Saturday May 10th 10:00 am Montana Shakedown Hike with BSA Troop 496

Sunday May 11th No CIA - it's Mothers Day!

Friday- Sunday May 16th-18th - CIA/Confirmation Lutherdale Retreat! (No CIA Sunday)

This year, the CIA will be hosting a Rummage Sale at LOL in place of the usual Timbercrest Garage Sale. We would like to request that anyone wishing to donate items, please delay bringing them until the last week in May as space is limited in the Annex. There is some room, and we will certainly not turn anything away, so if you need to unload it - please do so! Craig Kallmayer

COMMITTEE REPORTS for inclusion in the 2007-2008 Lord of Life Annual Report are due as soon as possible and no later than May 11th. An electronic copy of the report is preferred. You then have a choice of submitting your report "on-line" or downloading a form that may be used for the report. A copy of last year's report (2007) was placed in each committee's mailbox for reference. Please submit your report on-line, or give it to Judy as soon as possible. Call the Church office at 847-895-8877 or talk to Ken Olson, Council President, if you have questions. Thanks

RACHEL'S DAY: SPEAKING UP FOR CHILDREN

Next Sunday, May 4 is the recommended day for Rachel's Day observance. It is a time for all to broaden our awareness of the violence that children face and actions to address it. Thirteen years ago, Rachel's day focused on "children at risk," which in many cases meant children we did not individually know or see. Yet in community and in the body of Christ, we are responsible for all children. Teaching and protecting all children will benefit those at risk. We look forward to the participation of the Sunday School children with a special song and artwork with their hope for the future. We will pass out blue ribbons to all at worship. Why blue ribbons? The color blue represents hope. Rachel's Day is a day to recognize that we can make a difference in the lives of children and children can live hope-filled lives.

PRAYER BLANKETS

The "Prayer Blanket" is a blanket that has been lovingly made by a member of the "Prayer Blanket Ministry" of Lord of Life. A prayer for comfort and healing accompanies each blanket. If you know someone who is in special need of being covered in prayer and who would like a blanket, please contact Pat Baehr or Lynn Haye

prayer chain

Our prayer chain will pray for family and friends in spiritual or physical need, in an emergency or a prayer of thanksgiving. To place the name of a person on the "Prayer Chain", please contact Ruth Pickard or Joyce Johnson.

SPECIAL PRAYERS

Names mentioned in the Special Prayers" section of our weekly bulletin will be printed for one month. You may leave a note for Judy or call the church office (847-895-8877) with the name of the person(s) for the prayer list.
