LORD OF LIFE LUTHERAN CHURCH

Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Schaumburg, Illinois 60193

847-895-8877

Seventh Sunday of Easter May 04, 2008

TRADITIONAL WORSHIP 8:00 A.M.

celebration worship 10:30 a.m.

Holy Communion is celebrated at both worship services.

Holy Communion

WE INVITE all baptized Christians to share in the Holy Communion celebration. Alert the server (sign of a "V" with you fingers) if you prefer grape juice instead of wine. Communion cups containing grape juice are in the center ring of the communion tray. Please follow the usher's direction.

The Lord of Life sanctuary is equipped with a "Personal PA" sound system that includes hearing assist units. If you have difficulty hearing portions of the service, please contact one of the ushers.

We love Children in Worship! Thank you for bringing them. Smile at a parent with a child. (Smile twice at a parent with more than one.) A smile goes a long way to support their efforts – a frown can discourage for life.

A Nursery Room for infants and young children is located downstairs. Directions: Exit the sanctuary; to your right is the stairwell. Go down the stairs, through the double door, and turn left. The Nursery Room is located about three-quarters of the way down. Please feel free to ask an usher for assistance.

WORSHIP REGISTRATION CARDS: All members and guests are asked to fill out the registration card found in your bulletin. You may return it to an usher as you come forward to receive Holy Communion. (If you forget, please give the card to an usher after the worship service.)

Gathering

The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God

prelude Give Me Jesus Richard Billingham

Welcome

*THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM

The congregation may turn and face the font. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation. C: Amen.

The presiding minister addresses the assembly.

P: Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.

Water may be poured into the font as the presiding minister gives thanks.

P: Blessed are you, O God, maker and ruler of all things. Your voice thundered over the waters at creation. You water the mountains and send springs into the valleys to refresh and satisfy all living things.

Through the waters of the flood you carried those in the ark to safety, you led your people Israel from slavery to freedom. In the wilderness you nourished them with water from the rock, and you brought them across the river Jordan to the promised land.

By the baptism of his death and resurrection, your Son Jesus has carried us to safety and freedom. The floods shall not overwhelm us, and the deep shall not swallow us up, for Christ has brought us over to the land of promise. He sends us to make disciples, baptizing in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Pour out your Holy Spirit; wash away sin in this cleansing water; clothe the baptized with Christ; and claim your daughters and sons, no longer slave and free, no longer male and female, but one with all the baptized in Christ Jesus, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen.

*GATHERING SONG ELW #825 You Servants of God

*GREETING

P: Alleluia! Christ is risen!

C: Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia!

*THE CANTICLE OF PRAISE This is the feast(see page 101)

*PRAYER OF THE DAY

P: O God of glory, your Son Jesus Christ suffered for us and ascended to your right hand. Unite us with Christ and each other in suffering and in joy, that all the world may be drawn into your bountiful presence, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

CHILDREN'S SERMON

LITANY FOR RACHEL'S DAY

L: Open our eyes, God,
C: So we may see the value of all God's children and that we may together plan for their safety and protection.

L: Open our ears, God,
C: So that we may hear the cries of the youth who are suffering from hunger and malnutrition and that we may together plan for their feeding and sustenance.

L: Open our hearts, God,
C: So that we may feel the powerlessness of the teens who are struggling to succeed in homes plagued with apathy, divisions, anger, and hopelessness and that we may help provide words of comfort, paths of power and courage for their successful journey to adulthood.

L: Open our lips, God,
C: So that we may overtly confront racism and sexism and that we may together bring about the utopia of unity in diversity necessary for our babies' growth and wholeness.

L: Open our minds, God,
C: and purge away individualism, negative pride and superior attitudes, and help us to understand that each and every child of God is given bountiful gifts regardless of color, gender, or race.

L: Open our arms, God,
C: So we may welcome children whose parents are incarcerated, absent from the home or struggling with addiction, and help us, together, to provide them with the love, strength and the stability needed to run this race of life.

L: Open us, God, so we may feel the breath of your spirit;
C: Open us, God, so we may feel the power of your majesty;
Open us, God, so that together we may be strengthened to bring about human liberation and wholeness for our children.

THE SERMON

Hymn of the Day ELW #576 We All Are One in Mission

*The NICENE Creed (please stand) A.M: With the whole church, let us confess our faith.

All: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

Eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

True God from true God, begotten, not made

Of one Being with the Father;

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary

and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

He suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

In accordance with the scriptures;

He ascended into heaven

And is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

And his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

Who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

Who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,

Who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

*prayer of intercession

Each petition of the prayers concludes with words:

A.M: God of life,

Response: hear our prayer.

*PEACE

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: And also with you.

Please share the peace of Christ with your brothers and sisters at this time.

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

For thine is the kingdom,

RACHEL'S DAY: SPEAKING UP FOR CHILDREN

Rachel's Day is a time for all to broaden our awareness of the violence that children face and actions to address it. Thirteen years ago, Rachel's day focused on "children at risk," which in many cases meant children we did not individually know or see. Yet in community and in the body of Christ, we are responsible for all children. Teaching and protecting all children will benefit those at risk. We look forward to the participation of the Sunday School children with a special song and artwork with their hope for the future. We will pass out blue ribbons to all at worship. Why blue ribbons? The color blue represents hope. Rachel's Day is a day to recognize that we can make a difference in the lives of children and children can live hope-filled lives.

LORD OF LIFE "LIFELINES"

You can access the "Lifelines" on our web-site (and in living color too). The address is www.lord-of-life.org. Beginning with the June issue (July and August too), copies of the Lifelines will not be mailed (via "snail" mail) to individual homes but instead a quantity of hard copies will be available at church. We are looking for ways to support our "green" initiative, ease the budget slightly, greatly ease the pressure from Anne, Judy and Chris (no mail deadline), and increase the timeliness of the information. Help us "get the word out" and encourage one another to check the Lord of Life web-site for information. We will reevaluate this procedure before the September issue. If you have questions give Pr. Thad or Judy a call at 847-895-8877.

Your comments are welcome! Judy

COMMITTEE REPORTS for inclusion in the 2007-2008 Lord of Life Annual Report are due as soon as possible and no later than May 11th. An electronic copy of the report is preferred. Reports may be submitted through our web-site by going to www.lord-of-life.org, placing your cursor on "Resources", then moving down and clicking "On-line Registration Forms". You then have a choice of submitting your report "on-line" or downloading a form that may be used for the report. A copy of last year's report (2007) was placed in each committee's mailbox for reference. Please submit your report on-line, or give it to Judy as soon as possible. Call the Church office at 847-895-8877 or talk to Ken Olson, Council President, if you have questions. Thanks

PENTECOST SUNDAY, MAY 11

The festival derives its name from the Jewish festival of Pentecost, observed fifty days after Passover. On the fiftieth day of Easter we celebrate the Holy Spirit as the power of God among us that heals, forgives, inspires and unites. In the reading from Acts, images of wind and fire describe the Spirit poured out on disciples of all nations. In the one Spirit we were baptized into one body, and at the Lord's table the Spirit unites us for witness in the world.

P.S. Don't forget to wear RED in celebration of the Festival of Pentecost

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY May 11

Bring your mother, grandmother, and surrogate mother to church on Mother's Day and receive a living plant, a beautiful Red begonia. As you watch the plant grow, you can also watch your faith grow. A special tribute to all mothers, who feed us, love us, clothe us and bring us to God's house. May God bless you and protect you always. The Outreach Committee

WOMEN'S COMMUNITY BIBLE STUDY meets most Wednesday mornings starting at 9 a.m. Currently we are studying the book of Genesis. Contact Sandy Tabick for more information.

Your weekly green message

Weekly messages to help reinforce the monthly topic of obtaining your food supply locally:

John Ikerd is Professor Emeritus, University of Missouri. Here is an excerpt from his essay on "Eating Locally - A Matter of Integrity"
"...By eating local, by creating relationships of integrity around food and farming, we can discover again, within ourselves, a deeper sense of responsibility toward the world - toward the earth and the living things of the earth, including other people. In so directing ourselves, we can reconnect with the spiritual, the moral, the higher absolute order of things, of which we humans are but a part and within which we must function. By eating local, we can begin restoring integrity to our food system and to our society, and thus, can again arrive at a state in which of life on earth is genuinely human..."

THE GREEN TEAM will meet Monday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the church basement. Anyone who is interested in a greener world is invited.
