The Day of Pentecost May 11, 2008

TRADITIONAL WORSHIP 8:00 A.M.

celebration worship 10:30 a.m.

Holy Communion is celebrated at both worship services.

Holy Communion

WE INVITE all baptized Christians to share in the Holy Communion celebration. Alert the server (sign of a "V" with you fingers) if you prefer grape juice instead of wine. Communion cups containing grape juice are in the center ring of the communion tray. Please follow the usher's direction.

The Lord of Life sanctuary is equipped with a "Personal PA" sound system that includes hearing assist units. If you have difficulty hearing portions of the service, please contact one of the ushers.

We love Children in Worship! Thank you for bringing them. Smile at a parent with a child. (Smile twice at a parent with more than one.) A smile goes a long way to support their efforts – a frown can discourage for life.

A Nursery Room for infants and young children is located downstairs. Directions: Exit the sanctuary; to your right is the stairwell. Go down the stairs, through the double door, and turn left. The Nursery Room is located about three-quarters of the way down. Please feel free to ask an usher for assistance.

WORSHIP REGISTRATION CARDS: All members and guests are asked to fill out the registration card found in your bulletin. You may return it to an usher as you come forward to receive Holy Communion. (If you forget, please give the card to an usher after the worship service.)

Gathering

The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God

prelude

Welcome

*THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM

The congregation may turn and face the font. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation. C: Amen.

The presiding minister addresses the assembly.

P: Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.

Water may be poured into the font as the presiding minister gives thanks.

P: Blessed are you, O God, maker and ruler of all things. Your voice thundered over the waters at creation. You water the mountains and send springs into the valleys to refresh and satisfy all living things.

Through the waters of the flood you carried those in the ark to safety, you led your people Israel from slavery to freedom. In the wilderness you nourished them with water from the rock, and you brought them across the river Jordan to the promised land.

By the baptism of his death and resurrection, your Son Jesus has carried us to safety and freedom. The floods shall not overwhelm us, and the deep shall not swallow us up, for Christ has brought us over to the land of promise. He sends us to make disciples, baptizing in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Pour out your Holy Spirit; wash away sin in this cleansing water; clothe the baptized with Christ; and claim your daughters and sons, no longer slave and free, no longer male and female, but one with all the baptized in Christ Jesus, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen.

*PROCESSIONAL HYMN ELW #395 Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord

*GREETING

P: Alleluia! Christ is risen!

C: Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia!

P: The joy and peace of God be with you all.

C: And also with you.

*THE KYRIE In peace let us pray…. (see page 98)

*THE CANTICLE OF PRAISE This is the feast(see page 101)

*PRAYER OF THE DAY

P: O God, on this day you open the hearts of your faithful people by sending into us your Holy Spirit. Direct us by the light of that Spirit, that we may have a right judgment in all things and rejoice at all times in your peace, through Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen.

PENTECOST SUNDAY

The festival derives its name from the Jewish festival of Pentecost, observed fifty days after Passover. On the fiftieth day of Easter we celebrate the Holy Spirit as the power of God among us that heals, forgives, inspires and unites. In the reading from Acts, images of wind and fire describe the Spirit poured out on disciples of all nations. In the one Spirit we were baptized into one body, and at the Lord's table the Spirit unites us for witness in the world.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY

We hope you enjoy receiving a living plant, a beautiful Red begonia. As you watch the plant grow, you can also watch your faith grow. A special tribute to all mothers, who feed us, love us, clothe us and bring us to God's house. May God bless you and protect you always. The Outreach Committee

LORD OF LIFE "LIFELINES"

You can access the "Lifelines" on our web-site (and in living color too). The address is www.lord-of-life.org. Beginning with the June issue (July and August too), copies of the Lifelines will not be mailed (via "snail" mail) to individual homes but instead a quantity of hard copies will be available at church. We are looking for ways to support our "green" initiative, ease the budget slightly, greatly ease the pressure from Anne, Judy and Chris (no mail deadline), and increase the timeliness of the information. Help us "get the word out" and encourage one another to check the Lord of Life web-site for information. We will reevaluate this procedure before the September issue. If you have questions give Pr. Thad or Judy a call at 847-895-8877.
